Your New World of Work
The industrial revolution is over. You are in the information age. Familiar jobs are disappearing. New and strange ones are emerging. There is plenty of work to be done; but it will be done differently. To survive these frightening and confusing changes, you must understand and put these changes to work for you. Technology needs to be your friend. If you do not have a good basic understanding of computers, software and operating systems, take it upon yourself to become conversant with the one tool that will be a significant factor in your ability to land a good position. Software such as Microsoft Word, and Excel will be as necessary as using the telephone and the adding machine. If you aren't comfortable with terminology such as Windows, e-mail, mail merge, applications, search engine, download, search, escape, network...it's time for the vocabulary that will take you into the new millennium!
Organizational structures are flattening out, middle managers have been eliminated and companies are seeking temporary, project-based workers to be responsible for filling specific needs. The new workplace will expect you to keep your knowledge current. Pay will be based on results -- not on a time clock. Competition will be extremely tough! You will hear more and more about just in time staffing. "Those who don't take the initiative to keep ahead of the curve will be left in the dust."
Today's successful candidate must be flexible, creative and open to new ideas. Income requirements will be satisfied in a variety of ways. You may find that you have to be responsible for your own benefits, but you may also find that you can have five weeks of vacation if you so desire. There will be many confusing choices.
